RALEIGH — Law enforcement agencies across North Carolina are out on full patrol this week as the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program (NCGHSP) carries out its annual Operation Crash Reduction initiative, actively enforcing traffic laws through October 18.
The statewide crackdown combines high-visibility law enforcement patrols with public education to combat high speeds, distracted driving, and unbuckled drivers during one of the most statistically dangerous months on North Carolina roads.
Patrols Intensify During Peak Crash Month
The ongoing enforcement effort comes at a critical time for state roadways, as October historically sees a sharp increase in serious and fatal collisions across the Tar Heel State.
-
144 fatal crashes occurred on North Carolina roads during October of last year alone.
-
1,426 fatal crashes were recorded statewide across all of 2025.
-
143,000+ speeding violations and nearly 24,000 reckless driving citations were issued by N.C. law enforcement officers in 2025.
State traffic officials note that autumn events and changing seasonal conditions create additional hazards for drivers this time of year.
“This time of year is one of the most heavily trafficked on North Carolina roads, due to schooling events, festivals, football games and fall foliage,” said NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell. “We also experience a shorter period of daylight, which can reduce visibility and lead to increased safety risks. It is our goal to mitigate these risks through public awareness.”
Active Enforcement on Major Corridors
Through Sunday, motorists will notice a heightened presence of local police departments, county sheriff’s deputies, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol along key travel routes.
Drivers can expect to encounter:
-
Increased mobile patrols along designated high-crash corridors.
-
Active radar and speed-enforcement operations.
-
Digital speed-display signs deployed near school zones and heavy traffic zones.
Safety Reminders for Drivers on the Road This Week
NCGHSP officials emphasize that while officers are actively enforcing traffic laws, driver choices behind the wheel remain the primary line of defense against severe crashes:
-
Watch Your Speed: Speeding significantly reduces reaction time and increases stopping distance, particularly during unexpected stops or near pedestrian traffic.
-
Stay Focused: Put away mobile devices and avoid distractions. A distraction of just a few seconds can lead to a severe collision.
-
Buckle Up: Ensure every passenger in the vehicle is properly restrained before putting the vehicle in motion.
-
Adjust to Shorter Daylight: With sunset arriving earlier, stay extra alert for pedestrians, bicyclists, and wildlife during late-afternoon and evening commutes.
“Drivers often underestimate how quickly distraction or speed can turn a routine trip into a life-altering event,” Ezzell added. “By taking a few simple steps to stay focused and slow down, we can prevent tragedies and keep more families safe.”
