Coastal Carolina News reached out to corporate public relations after employees arrived to find permanent closure notices with zero prior warning.

WHITEVILLE, NC — Local residents expecting a routine meal or drink over the weekend were met with locked doors and empty drive-thru bays, as the Sonic Drive-In located at 602 North J.K. Powell Boulevard abruptly shuttered operations.

Staff arriving for Sunday shifts reported being met with a sign posted on the property announcing the drive-in was permanently closed. No advance notice provided to the drive-in workers, not only leaving those without a job, but a steady paycheck.

While Google business listings and local online mapping tools have updated to show the Whiteville location as permanently closed, corporate communications representatives for parent company Inspire Brands have not issued a formal public statement regarding the sudden shutdown. Coastal Carolina News has reached out to media relations for corporate clarification, but inquiries remain unanswered as of Wednesday afternoon.

The unexpected exit in Whiteville reflects a broader trend of abrupt location closures across the fast-food and quick-service restaurant industry. Throughout 2025 and into late 2026, national chains have quietly consolidated footprints, closing underperforming units facing rising labor expenses, elevated supply chain overhead, and changing consumer spending habits.

Unannounced closures typically occur in franchise-operated models when an operator defaults on agreements, surrenders lease terms, or experiences sudden financial insolvency. In such instances, corporate surrenders often take place overnight to manage liabilities and assets, leaving store-level employees to discover the shutdown as they arrive for duty.

It remains unclear whether the Whiteville property will be put up for commercial sale or leased to another operator.
