SUNSET BEACH, NC — A sewer line damaged during contractor work in Sunset Beach led to a spill of untreated wastewater into a tributary connected to the Calabash River on Monday, prompting an hours‑long response from Brunswick County Public Utilities.
The incident occurred late Monday morning along Mill Pond Road, where crews were working near an 8‑inch sewer force main. Around 11:40 a.m., the line was struck, causing a break that allowed wastewater to escape into the nearby waterway before the system could be shut down.
Public Utilities teams moved quickly to isolate the damaged section and begin repairs. The line was fully secured and restored by about 7:00 p.m. Monday.
Early estimates place the spill at roughly 8,800 gallons of untreated wastewater.
Cleanup at the site has been completed, and downstream water sampling is underway to monitor any environmental impacts. Additional updates will be provided if testing identifies concerns.
