Depth issues, injury load, and competitive‑readiness concerns end Knights’ 2026 campaign

BLADENBORO, NC— West Bladen High School has scrapped its varsity football season after an internal athletic review determined the Knights could not safely or competitively continue through the remainder of the 2026 slate.
Administrators said the decision followed a sustained drop in roster depth, with injuries, eligibility setbacks, and limited positional coverage creating conditions that no longer met state participation standards.
Coaches reported that several units – including offensive line, defensive secondary, and special teams had reached critical shortages that would compromise both player safety and competitive integrity.
The change also leaves Whiteville and the Columbus County programs with an unexpected open week, with each school adjusting its practice rhythm and game‑prep plans based on where the matchup had originally fallen.
The school noted that the team’s cumulative injury load had accelerated over the past three weeks, leaving West Bladen unable to field a stable rotation or maintain required substitution patterns.
Officials also cited concerns about competitive readiness, saying the Knights could not meet baseline thresholds for varsity‑level play without risking further injuries.
Athletic staff will continue conditioning and development sessions for players, with an emphasis on recovery, academic support, and off‑season preparation. No determination has been made regarding potential restructuring of the program ahead of winter workouts or spring football.
Families were notified earlier this week. The district said additional guidance will be issued as administrators evaluate long‑term program stability and participation planning.
