Identification brings long-awaited answers and a chance for loved ones to bring him home.
Myrtle Beach, SC — For more than three years, a man killed in a Myrtle Beach hit-and-run had no name.
Now, that has changed.
Authorities recently identified the victim as William Ray Griffith, 62, ending a years-long effort to determine who he was and reconnect him with his family.
Griffith was struck and killed on May 27, 2023, near North Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach. Although the driver involved was identified early in the investigation, officials were unable to determine the victim’s identity at the time.
The breakthrough came through forensic genealogy and the work of investigators and volunteers who continued searching for answers. Officials said Griffith had moved to the Myrtle Beach area from Kentucky several years before his death.
While the case remained open for years, those efforts ultimately provided what mattered most: a name, a family, and a path home.
For William Ray Griffith’s loved ones, the identification brings an end to years of uncertainty and the opportunity to finally lay him to rest.
