Rule 24 Hearing Scheduled This Week in Nigel Edge Case

Nigel Max Edge (BCSO)

Court expected to address issues related to potential capital prosecution in Southport mass shooting case.

BOLIVIA, NC — A Rule 24 hearing for Nigel Edge is scheduled for Wednesday, October  7, marking the latest court proceeding in the criminal case stemming from the September 2025 mass shooting at the American Fish Company in Southport.

Edge faces multiple charges in connection with the shooting, which left three people dead and several others injured.

A Rule 24 hearing is a proceeding used in North Carolina to address matters related to a potential death penalty prosecution. The hearing comes after earlier proceedings in the case focused heavily on competency evaluations and mental health assessments.

Court activity earlier this year resulted in delays to Rule 24 proceedings while questions surrounding Edge’s competency were evaluated. The case has remained under close watch as the court works through procedural matters before moving toward trial.

This October 7 hearing could provide additional clarity on the status of the case, including whether prosecutors intend to pursue a capital prosecution and whether competency-related issues remain before the court.

Coastal Carolina News will provide updates following the hearing as additional information becomes available through court proceedings and official filings.
