HORRY COUNTY, SC — Horry County Fire Rescue is warning residents about the hazards of unsafe electronics storage and charging after a collection of battery-powered devices caused a recent structure fire.
The fire began when a collection of battery-powered electronics, including e-cigarette and vaping devices, was stored together inside a box. The items began to overheat and burn, catching both the cardboard container and the room on fire.
The warning comes during Fire Prevention Week 2026, themed “Charge Into Fire Safety. Safe Charging is a Superpower.”
Fire officials stress that individuals with collections of battery-powered devices should avoid placing them together in a single box. Unsafe charging habits and improper disposal of electronics represent major fire hazards.
Residents seeking to get rid of out-of-commission electronics are advised to check with local battery stores and recycling centers to see which locations accept those items.
