Public safety officials urge residents and visitors to stay clear and call 9-1-1 if suspicious military ordnance is discovered on the beach.
BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC –– An unexploded ordnance discovered near Beach Access 35 on Bald Head Island approximately eight hours ago remains secured as authorities prepare for a safe detonation Saturday morning.
According to the Bald Head Island Department of Public Safety, the area around the device has been blocked off and will remain closed until specialized personnel can safely detonate the ordnance.
Officials noted that unexploded military ordnance occasionally washes ashore along the North Carolina coast. Residents and visitors are reminded that such items can be extremely dangerous, even if they appear old or inactive.
Anyone who encounters a suspicious object believed to be unexploded ordnance should not touch, move, or disturb it. Instead, leave the area immediately, keep others away, and call 9-1-1 to report its location.
The Bald Head Island Department of Public Safety will provide updates as they become available following Saturday morning’s detonation operation.
