Increased enforcement efforts this week aim to reduce crashes and encourage safer behavior behind the wheel.

Columbus County NC — Drivers traveling through Columbus County may notice an increased law enforcement presence this week as local deputies join a statewide initiative focused on reducing traffic crashes and improving roadway safety.

The effort is part of Operation Crash Reduction, a campaign supported by the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program that encourages motorists to make safer decisions behind the wheel through a combination of education and enforcement.

According to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies will be placing additional emphasis on traffic safety enforcement throughout the week, targeting behaviors commonly associated with serious and fatal crashes.

Traffic safety officials say speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and failure to wear seat belts continue to be among the leading factors contributing to preventable crashes across North Carolina. As a result, drivers are being encouraged to slow down, pay attention to the roadway and eliminate distractions while driving.

The campaign also serves as a reminder that roadway safety extends beyond law enforcement efforts. Every driver, passenger, cyclist and pedestrian plays a role in preventing crashes and protecting lives.

Motorists are encouraged to:

  • Observe posted speed limits.
  • Put away phones and other distractions while driving.
  • Wear a seat belt on every trip.
  • Never operate a vehicle while impaired.
  • Remain alert and attentive to surrounding traffic conditions.

Officials hope the increased visibility of law enforcement and continued public awareness efforts will encourage safer driving habits and help prevent crashes on Columbus County roadways.

As traffic volumes remain high throughout the region, public safety leaders say even small decisions behind the wheel can have a significant impact on keeping roads safe for everyone.
