HATTERAS ISLAND, NC — While our primary news coverage centers on Brunswick, Columbus, and Horry counties, Coastal Carolina News is following an ongoing severe weather situation affecting our neighbor communities along the Outer Banks.

A powerful, long-duration nor’easter continues to park off the North Carolina coast, generating high winds, heavy surf, and severe ocean overwash across low-lying coastal corridors.

Dare County Emergency Management maintains a mandatory visitor evacuation for Hatteras Island that took effect Friday evening. Re-entry for non-residents remains strictly suspended as emergency officials assess infrastructure stability and wave action. Access across Oregon Inlet is restricted to essential personnel, emergency responders, and permanent residents carrying valid credentials.

North Carolina Department of Transportation crews remain on-site along vulnerable stretches of N.C. Highway 12, deploying heavy equipment to clear sand and tidal overwash. Intermittent highway closures remain active during peak high-tide cycles, and regional ferry operations across the Pamlico Sound have been temporarily suspended due to hazardous water conditions.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service warn that elevated water levels, coastal erosion, and northeast wind gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph will persist through mid-week. While our local tri-county area continues to experience cooler autumn temperatures and breezy conditions, residents traveling north are advised to consult NCDOT travel advisories and local county emergency management updates.
