SHALLOTTE, NC — Site preparation and heavy machinery activity along the U.S. 17 corridor have reignited community interest in the proposed Wawa convenience store and fueling station in Shallotte. Architectural filings confirm plans for Wawa Store # 6124, designated under prototype version U59FB-L, located at 2920 Frontage Road near Ocean Highway, directly adjacent to Chick-fil-A. Detailed engineering plans prepared by Harrison French & Associates outline a complete commercial buildout encompassing civil, structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and canopy specifications.

Because the Frontage Road property sits squarely within Shallotte’s established commercial corridor, the development conforms to by-right commercial usage. The project did not require a public rezoning vote before the Shallotte Board of Aldermen, proceeding instead through standard administrative channels, including Technical Review Committee site plan reviews, stormwater management approvals, and NCDOT driveway access permitting along the highway.
While administrative and permitting steps shifted initial timelines, recent land clearing and site work mark a visible transition toward ground breaking. Construction activity is expected to pick up momentum in late 2026 as crews prepare the parcel for an anticipated grand opening target in 2027.
The Shallotte buildout represents one piece of Wawa’s extensive regional expansion across the coastal Cape Fear region. Active development continues nearby in Calabash along Highway 17 at Calabash Road, while additional Brunswick County sites under contract include a two-acre tract at U.S. 17 and Lanvale Road in Leland and a location at 3 Green Swamp Road NW in Supply.
Until these local footprint projects reach completion, area residents can visit Wawa’s operating locations just across the bridge in New Hanover County.
