RALEIGH — The rich agricultural history of North Carolina’s top cash crop will take center stage at the N.C. State Fair on Friday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m., as retired auctioneers and tobacco buyers gather in Heritage Circle for the annual Mock Tobacco Auction.
Held inside the Tobacco Pavilion, the event offers fairgoers a rare, firsthand look at the fast-paced warehouse auctions that once served as the economic heartbeat of rural farming communities across the Tar Heel State.
N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler will join retired industry veterans to recreate the iconic sights and sounds of the traditional tobacco market.
Preserving a Historic Agricultural Tradition
For generations, the warehouse auction marked the culmination of a full season’s labor for farm families—taking flue-cured tobacco from seedbed to harvest, curing, and finally to market.
During traditional warehouse sales:
-
Farmers brought cured leaves bundled onto burlap sheets and arranged them in long, sweeping rows across expansive warehouse floors.
-
Auctioneers, corporate buyers, and warehouse ticket-markers walked down each row in tandem.
-
Bidding moved at breakneck speed, led by the rhythm and chant of the tobacco auctioneer as buyers used subtle hand gestures to place their bids.
The tobacco featured in Friday’s mock auction was cured on site at the fairgrounds in Heritage Circle’s traditional wood-burning barn following last week’s annual tobacco looping competition.
A Shift in Modern Agriculture
While most of today’s tobacco is grown under contract and delivered directly to processors rather than sold on open auction floors, North Carolina remains the nation’s leading producer of flue-cured tobacco.
Friday’s gathering in the Tobacco Pavilion serves to educate younger generations and celebrate the legacy of the farm families and warehousemen who built North Carolina’s agricultural economy.
