RALEIGH, NC — North Carolina’s shift to an all‑electronic vehicle registration system officially begins October 1, 2026, marking the end of routine license plate stickers and printed registration cards.
The launch date does not change any driver’s current renewal schedule. If a registration normally expires in March, June, or any other month, that date remains the same. Drivers will move into the digital system at their next regularly scheduled renewal after October 1, and until that renewal arrives, existing stickers and paper cards remain fully valid.
Beginning October 1, drivers will no longer receive renewal stickers or automatically mailed registration cards. Instead, registration will be available in digital form through the DMV’s online platforms, where drivers can view, download, or print their registration at no cost. Those who prefer a physical card may request one for a $5.00 fee to cover printing and postage.
Law enforcement officers already verify registration electronically using in‑car systems that check a vehicle’s status by plate number, and they do not rely on stickers for confirmation.
Drivers must still present a physical driver’s license during a traffic stop to establish identification.
Annual renewals, vehicle property taxes, and required safety or emissions inspections remain unchanged under the new system. The state’s Tag & Tax Together program continues to operate as it does today.
Digital registration can be accessed through the official MyDMV portal using a driver’s license or ID number, the last four digits of a Social Security number, and date of birth. After logging in, drivers can select the “My Vehicles” section to view or print their active registration.
The PayIT NC app and web portal also provide secure access to digital documents, renewal processing, and account linking through email, Google, or Apple credentials.
The DMV is expected to provide additional public guidance as the statewide rollout digital system begins on October first.
