Michael Wayne Motter, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2026, at the age of 83. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose kindness, faith, love of family, and zest for life touched many people throughout his years.
Michael was born on April 1, 1943, to Floyd Robison Motter and Nell Dorothy Hallman Weathersby. From an early age, Michael demonstrated a strong work ethic. His first job as a young boy was delivering newspapers, beginning a long and successful career in sales and the appliance industry.
He married his high school sweetheart, Hannah “Scottie” Mills, and together they built a family and shared 25 years of marriage. Michael began his professional career as a traveling salesman for a major appliance manufacturer. Following Scottie’s passing, he continued his career with Cate-NcLauren, where he worked as a salesman for many years.
Michael later partnered with Robert Shealy of Chapin, South Carolina, and together they purchased the business and established their own appliance company. Their partnership continued for many years before they opened an appliance and television center in Columbia, South Carolina. Michael dedicated many years to serving his customers and community before eventually retiring.
In the early 1980s, Michael married Kathy Wingate Mauritz. Through this marriage, he became a loving stepfather to Andrew Steven Mauritz, Gwendolyn Marie Mauritz, and Edward (Ed) Mauritz, who preceded him in death.
After retirement, Michael moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he made his home Little River SC. It was there that he met Roberta Lamson Motter. The two shared a loving marriage and many happy years together until Roberta’s passing in 2022.
Michael was a devoted Christian and a member of Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church. His faith was an important part of his life, and he treasured the fellowship and friendships he found through his church community.
Outside of his career and family, Michael enjoyed many of life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid golfer and traveler who loved exploring new places and making memories along the way. He was also a devoted pet lover and found great joy in the companionship of animals. Above all, Michael cherished his family and friends. He loved them deeply, and that love was returned wholeheartedly.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Robison Motter and Nell Dorothy Hallman Weathersby; his first wife, Hannah “Scottie” Mills; his son Rodger Glenn Motter; his stepson, Edward (Ed) Mauritz; and his third wife, Roberta Lamson Motter.
He is survived by his son, Michael Trevor Motter; his grandchildren, Hannah Marie Motter, Trevor Addison Motter, Erin Elizabeth Motter, and Morgan Rebecca Jolly; his great-grandchildren, Kingsley Beck Motter and Kaia Sterling Motter; his stepchildren, Andrew Steven Mauritz and Gwendolyn Marie Mauritz; and many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Michael leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, hard work, friendship, and devotion to those he held dear. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
