Residents may notice temporary water discoloration as crews conduct routine system checks to verify pressure and safety.

SUNSET BEACH, NC —  The Sunset Beach Fire Department will spend several days in October conducting routine fire hydrant flow testing across Sunset Beach Island, a process designed to ensure adequate water pressure and maintain the reliability of the community’s fire protection infrastructure.

Testing will occur between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on scheduled dates throughout the island, with crews evaluating hydrant performance and water flow capabilities in various neighborhoods.

The department’s west side testing is scheduled for October 7 and October 8 and will include W. Main Street, Northshore Drive West, 27th through 40th streets, Bay Street, Inlet Street and Sunset Lane.

East side testing will take place October 13 and October 14, covering E. Main Street, Northshore Drive East, Riverside Drive, Marlin Street, Sailfish Street, Dolphin Street, Cobia Street and streets numbered First through 19th.

Officials said residents in testing areas may notice temporary water discoloration while hydrants are being flushed and evaluated. The condition is considered normal and typically clears quickly once testing is completed.

As a precaution, residents are encouraged to run cold water faucets for several minutes until the water becomes clear if discoloration occurs. The department also recommends avoiding white or light-colored laundry loads during testing hours in affected neighborhoods.

Routine hydrant testing helps fire officials verify that hydrants are operating properly and ensures firefighters have access to adequate water pressure during emergency responses.
