TABOR CITY, N.C. — A routine traffic checkpoint in Tabor City led to the arrest of two individuals on drug and traffic-related charges earlier this week, officials announced.
On Sept. 29, deputies with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Highway Enforcement Action Team (H.E.A.T.), a branch of the department’s Special Operations Division, set up a North Carolina Chapter 20 traffic checking station on Cox Town Road near Wright Road.
According to a release from Sheriff W. A. Rogers, deputies stopped a northbound Chevy Malibu driven by David Junior Jenkins, 48, of Knightdale, N.C. When asked for his driver’s license, Jenkins provided only an identification card. While reviewing the card, a deputy noticed Jenkins attempting to hide a glass pipe in plain view. Jenkins was asked to step out of the car and was immediately detained.
Deputies then instructed the passenger, 37-year-old Christina Fulghum of Loris, S.C., to step out of the vehicle. Fulghum was found in possession of a bag containing a powder-like substance and was placed in handcuffs.
A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded an additional glass pipe and more of the powder-like substance. Investigators also discovered that Fulghum had an active outstanding warrant for her arrest.
Both individuals were transported to the Columbus County Law Enforcement Center and face multiple charges:
-
David Junior Jenkins was charged with driving while license revoked and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held with no bond.
-
Christina Fulghum was charged with possession of a Schedule I controlled substance, felony possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to appear on a misdemeanor. Her bond was set at $50,900 secured.
“Every time our deputies take drugs off the streets, they have potentially prevented a tragedy in our community,” Sheriff Rogers said in a statement. “The H.E.A.T. team is designed to target traffic and drug-related activities we see in our high-crime areas, and this is another example of their hard work paying off.”
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
All individuals named in this report are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Charges and case statuses may change as investigations and court proceedings continue.
