WHITEVILLE, N.C. — Southeastern Community College (SCC) recently celebrated the graduation of its latest phlebotomy class, honoring a cohort of students who completed the college’s one-semester certificate program.
Instructor Tanya Bellamy praised the graduating group for their resilience, focus, and mutual support throughout the rigorous coursework.
“They were a resilient, hardworking and family-oriented class,” Bellamy said. “They supported one another and stayed focused on reaching their goals.”
SCC’s Phlebotomy Program delivers focused, hands-on training that prepares students for immediate entry-level workforce positions. The program holds both state accreditation and national accreditation through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
Bellamy emphasized that NAACLS accreditation ensures the curriculum adheres to strict national standards, offering graduates heightened flexibility in job placement and board certification exams.
“Because we are accredited, a student can take any registry exam for phlebotomy and can take our certificate and work anywhere in the U.S.,” Bellamy explained. “Graduates from an accredited program are often chosen over someone who is not for a job.”
Regional healthcare providers rely on phlebotomists in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood donation centers, and outpatient clinics to collect blood specimens accurately for clinical diagnosis and treatment. Bellamy noted that local employers recognize the standard of preparation SCC graduates bring to the workplace.
“Employers around the region know when they hire an SCC student that they have a quality employee,” Bellamy said.
In addition to fast-tracking entry into the workforce, the certificate frequently serves as an educational steppingstone for healthcare professionals aiming to advance into fields such as nursing, medical laboratory technology, or healthcare administration.
