Brunswick County, NC — Brunswick County Schools will not renew its agreements with the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina for after‑school, summer camp, and full‑day camp programming held in district facilities.
The district said the decision follows a review of concerns involving student supervision and safety within YMCA‑operated programs.
During that review, officials determined it was necessary to reassess staffing expectations, supervision practices, safety procedures, and the overall structure required for future after‑school care.
District leaders noted that when concerns involving the care and supervision of children are brought forward, they have a responsibility to evaluate those concerns and determine whether changes are needed. In this case, Brunswick County Schools said it believes a change in direction is appropriate.
As part of that shift, the district will pursue alternative options for after‑school care while examining the safeguards and program structure needed to best support students and families.
Officials acknowledged the inconvenience the transition may create for families who rely on consistent after‑school services and apologized for the disruption.
Because the matter involves students and personnel, Brunswick County Schools said it will not publicly discuss individual incidents or circumstances.
The district expressed appreciation for the services the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina has provided and for the community’s patience during the transition.
