Raleigh, NC — North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson’s office has advanced three major actions this month with direct implications for residents in Brunswick and Columbus counties, touching on youth safety, utility rates, and prescription drug costs.
Meta Trial Over Youth Mental Health
Jackson and 28 other attorneys general opened arguments in a federal lawsuit alleging Meta built Instagram and Facebook with addictive features that harm minors. The states say internal research showed clear risks to youth mental health that were not fully disclosed. The case could influence future safety standards for platforms widely used by students in local schools.
Duke Energy Rate Increase Opposition
Jackson declined to support a proposed settlement in the Duke Energy Progress rate case that would raise residential electric bills by about 6.8% over two years. The increase would affect customers in Eastern North Carolina, including parts of Brunswick and Columbus counties. Jackson argued the plan places too much of the burden on households rather than large industrial users and data centers. The Utilities Commission will make the final decision.
$400 Million Sandoz Settlement in Principle
Jackson also announced a $400 million settlement in principle with Sandoz, reached through a coalition of 43 attorneys general. The case alleges the company conspired with competitors to inflate prices on widely used generic medications. Many residents in Brunswick and Columbus counties rely on generics for chronic conditions, making the settlement significant for local patients if finalized.
Together, these actions reflect a broader push by the Attorney General’s office to challenge corporate practices that affect everyday life in Southeastern North Carolina – from social‑media safety to monthly power bills to prescription costs.
