K9 Sandy and K9 Dune officially named as handlers begin intensive five‑week training.
OAK ISLAND, NC — The Oak Island Police Department shared two major developments this week as the agency continues working to reintroduce its K‑9 Unit.
The department has officially selected the names for its two incoming K‑9 officers: K9 Sandy, a female Chocolate Labrador, and K9 Dune, a male Black Labrador. The names were chosen following a public call for suggestions, and officials say the pairings offer each dog a distinct identity that reflects both the community and their individual roles within the unit.
Alongside the naming announcement, Officers Beau Boose and Gary Green – who were specifically chosen to serve as handlers began their five‑week live‑in training course. The program marks a significant step in preparing the team for deployment and is considered a cornerstone of the unit’s reintroduction.
In a personal letter, Police Chief Charlie Morris thanked both officers for their willingness to take on the responsibility of becoming K‑9 handlers, noting the commitment required for the role. He added that he looks forward to having all four members of the team back soon so the department can move forward with launching the program.
The department continues to document the selection, training, and preparation process and plans to share additional updates with the community as the K‑9 Unit progresses toward full operational status.
