Charles Clarence Vining, Sr. – Oak Island, NC

Charles Clarence Vining, Sr., of Oak Island, North Carolina, passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, on August 26, 2026, at the age of 82.

Born in Troup County, LaGrange, Georgia, on August 9, 1944, he was the son of the late Thomas Franklin Vining (TF) and Colleen Francis Vining. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Louise Vining.

Charles graduated from Myers Park High School in Charlotte and proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he worked as a District Manager for 7-Eleven, ConocoPhillips, and Circle K, serving communities from Jacksonville, North Carolina, to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Being the hardworking man that he was, after retirement he continued to work, joining his longtime family friends, Mark and James Warren, at the Yaupon Napa Store.

Charles had a strong work ethic, but an even stronger love for his family and his church. He was always the first one there when he was needed, no matter the task at hand. He rarely took time for himself; his hobbies never seemed complete unless he was sharing them with those he loved.

He enjoyed working in his yard, growing and canning vegetables, fishing, and traveling. He loved yard sales, auctions, casinos, UNC Tar Heel basketball, and—perhaps most importantly—Duke’s Mayonnaise!

Charles is survived by his two children, Charles Vining, Jr., and his wife, Misty; and Missy Vining (Chris). He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Bradley Vining (Brianna) and McKaylah Navitskis (Adam); and his two great-grandchildren, Cohen Daniel Watson Vining and Briar Willow Vining, with his third great-grandchild on the way.

Charles’ extended family includes three stepchildren: Sandra Simmers, the late Randy Turner, and Debra Turner; six additional grandchildren; and four additional great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved very much.

A Celebration of Life with full military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on September 12, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Oak Island, led by Pastor Lyle LaFontaine. Charles was a decades-long member of the church and proudly served as a beloved deacon.

Pallbearers will be Charles Vining, Jr.; Bradley Vining; Clint Simpson; Adam Navitskis; Beau Warren; and Samuel Rabon.
