WHITEVILLE — The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is celebrating its newest certified K‑9 team after Deputy Hunt and K‑9 Draco successfully completed their Patrol K‑9 Certification, marking a major milestone in the agency’s growing K‑9 program.
Draco, a 2‑year‑old German Shepherd imported from Hungary, is trained in both patrol work and narcotics detection. Officials say the certification reflects countless hours of training, conditioning, and teamwork between Deputy Hunt and his partner, who will now assist with searches, tracking, suspect apprehension, and drug enforcement operations throughout the county.
Draco was donated to the Sheriff’s Office through Public Safety Dogs, Inc., a Burlington‑based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Mike Craig. The organization provides fully trained K‑9s to agencies nationwide through tax‑deductible donations. Each dog represents an investment of more than $22,000 and arrives with essential equipment, vaccinations, and heartworm prevention.
Sheriff’s Office leaders expressed appreciation for Public Safety Dogs, Inc. and its continued support of law enforcement agencies across the country.
