Safety Upgrades, Overpass Project Advance Along Highway 544 Near CCU

Safety improvements along Highway 544 are moving ahead as Coastal Carolina University and the South Carolina Department of Transportation continue a coordinated effort to address pedestrian and traffic concerns near campus.

In a message to students, faculty, and staff, CCU President James Winebrake, Ph.D., outlined several immediate changes coming to the corridor. The posted speed limit will be reduced to 35 miles per hour, a HAWK pedestrian‑activated signal will be installed, and pavement markings will be refreshed to improve visibility. Winebrake said the upgrades build on earlier work already completed along 544 and reflect a shared commitment to improving safety in one of the university’s busiest areas.

Overpass Project Moves Forward

The university’s long‑planned pedestrian overpass also reached two major milestones. CCU’s board of trustees approved advancing to phase two of the state’s property‑acquisition process for land near Founders Drive, the proposed site of the structure. Trustees also authorized an intergovernmental agreement with SCDOT, allowing the agency to oversee the project and manage related infrastructure improvements.

Winebrake described the approvals as “important milestones” toward completing the overpass, a project that has been discussed for several years as pedestrian traffic continues to increase around campus.

Continued Collaboration

Winebrake credited SCDOT, local and state partners, and CCU’s trustees for their cooperation and responsiveness. He said the university will continue evaluating additional long‑term improvements along Highway 544 as enrollment grows and campus development expands.

“The progress we are making reflects the dedication of many individuals and organizations working together to support the safety and well‑being of our campus community,” Winebrake said.

CCU plans to provide updates as the overpass project and other safety enhancements move forward.
