TABOR CITY, NC — At least 10 individuals were detained Thursday evening during a driver’s license checkpoint near the intersection of N.C. Highway 904 and Pireway Road in Tabor City, according to regional reporting by Enlace Latino NC and tracking by the advocacy group Siembra NC.
The September 24 operation involved a joint presence of local law enforcement and federal immigration personnel. Motorists reported that officers went beyond routine license checks to question vehicle passengers about legal residency status, detaining indiividuals unable to provide documentation.
The enforcement action underscores the localized impact of the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office’s participation in the federal 287(g) Task Force Model agreement, which permits collaborative street-level enforcement.
Families and advocates reported challenges locating detained individuals across regional holding facilities in the wake of the sweep. The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment, citing active investigative protocols, and official arrest logs have not yet been released.
