Major Fraud Investigation Underway in Tabor City After $200,000 Loss Reported

TABOR CITY, NC — Investigators with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office have opened a high-dollar financial crime investigation following a report of fraud and embezzlement on Monday afternoon.

Deputy Nathan Gilbert responded to a residence on Watts Lewis Drive in Tabor City around 4:07 p.m. on Sept. 28. A 56-year-old male resident reported that $200,000 in cash had been taken through false pretenses and embezzlement schemes.

Further details regarding suspects or the specific nature of the financial transaction have not yet been released as criminal investigators work to trace the funds.
