NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Local investigators are urging the public for information after a homemade explosive device was discovered hidden near a public beach access earlier this week.
The incident began Monday afternoon, September 28, when a beachgoer spotted a suspicious item tucked in the landscaping near the public restrooms at the 12th Avenue North beach access along Ocean Boulevard and notified authorities at approximately 2:49 p.m.
The Horry County Police Department Bomb Squad responded to the scene, safely recovered the device, and later destroyed it off-site in a controlled detonation. No injuries were reported, and the beach access has since reopened.
Unlike historical military ordnance occasionally washed ashore along the Grand Strand, officials confirmed the item was deliberately manufactured and placed.
Investigators believe the device may have been left unattended near the public amenities since Sunday, September 27. Detectives are asking anyone who was in the area between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. that Sunday to review any photos, video footage, or memories of suspicious activity near the showers and restrooms.
No arrests have been made, and searches of nearby beach accesses yielded no additional devices.
