Ever wonder what actually keeps a municipality humming behind the scenes? Residents of Leland are about to find out firsthand.
LELAND, NC — The Town of Leland has officially opened applications for its first-ever Citizens Academy, a tuition-free, six-week immersion program designed to pull back the curtain on local government operations, public services, and day-to-day administration.
Building on the momentum of the town’s popular Let’s Talk Leland community series, municipal leaders are hoping to foster an even deeper connection between local government and the people it serves.
“We have seen great engagement with our Let’s Talk Leland series, and we’re excited to build on that through the Leland Citizens Academy,” said Mayor Brenda Bozeman. “This will give residents an even closer look at how local government works and the services Town staff provide each day.”
Running from January 6 through February 10, the program will feature weekly interactive sessions led directly by Town staff. Classes will be held every Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at various municipal facilities across the area. To ensure a hands-on, personalized experience, participation for this inaugural cohort will be capped at just 20 people.
Those who successfully complete all six sessions will cross a major milestone on February 18, receiving formal recognition during a graduation ceremony held at 6 p.m. during the Regular Town Council Meeting at Town Hall, located at 102 Town Hall Drive.
The academy is open to anyone who lives or owns a business within the Leland town limits. Applications are currently live online and will be accepted through November 30, with selected participants receiving email notifications on December 21, 2026.
Town officials note that the Citizens Academy is slated to become a recurring offering, with future cohorts planned for the summer and winter seasons. Updates regarding future application windows and program schedules will be shared in advance on the Town website and its official social media channels.
