North Carolina State Board of Education Adopts Overhauled 2026 Mathematics Standards

North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI)

RALEIGH, NC — The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) K-12 Math team has announced that during the October 1, 2026, North Carolina State Board of Education meeting, the Board officially adopted the proposed 2026 K-12 Mathematics Standard Course of Study.

This milestone follows a comprehensive review and revision process informed by more than two years of feedback from educators, administrators, families, students, institutions of higher education, business and industry representatives, national organizations, charter schools, and school districts across the state.

The approved standards reflect the work of over 70 educators from across North Carolina, including teachers from every grade level, school and district instructional leaders, and faculty representing both math and math education from the NC Community College System and UNC System campuses.

Local Impact for Regional Districts

For local public school units—including Brunswick County Schools and Columbus County Schools—the state-level adoption initiates a multi-year preparation window. As districts statewide look ahead, local curriculum leaders will begin analyzing the structural changes to plan for professional development, instructional materials alignment, and teacher training.

Key Structural Updates

The newly adopted framework introduces significant shifts to the state’s high school curriculum. While students will continue to be required to earn four math credits for graduation, the mandatory requirements for NC Math 3 and NC Math 4 are being dropped.

Following the completion of Math 1 and Math 2, students across the state will gain access to a more flexible menu of course options tailored more closely to specific career interests, technical fields, and post-secondary goals – ranging from applied statistics and data science to mathematical modeling and logic.

Implementation Timeline

To ensure local districts and educators have adequate time to prepare, transition to the new standards will follow a phased rollout, with full classroom implementation scheduled across all public schools for the 2028–29 school year.
