BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC — Portions of the trail system within the Bald Head Woods Coastal Reserve have been temporarily closed after officials reported the discovery of a yellow jacket nest. The reserve encompasses 186 acres of protected maritime forest and is one of 10 sites within the North Carolina Coastal Reserve system.
In an October 2 public notice, the Village of Bald Head Island Department of Public Safety announced the closure of both entrances to the affected trail area while eradication efforts are underway.
“Due to an invasive yellow jacket nest, both entrances are closed for public safety,” the department stated.
According to officials, a southern section of the trail remains open, and Public Works crews are working to eradicate the nest.
Coastal Carolina News Note: The village’s public notice described the insects as an “invasive yellow jacket nest.” The notice did not identify the species involved.
