Complaint alleges failures in fall prevention, monitoring and treatment at Brunswick Medical Center; Novant says it cannot comment on active litigation.
BOLIVIA, NC — Following his mother’s death after treatment at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center in Bolivia, Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew launched legal action against Novant Health and associated organizations. The suit, which claims medical malpractice and wrongful death stems from a January 16, 2025 admission triggered by medical complications.
The filing emphasizes that despite family members alerting hospital personnel to her history of unsteadiness and receiving assurances that safeguards were in place, the incident occurred. According to the lawsuit, Jones suffered an unwitnessed fall inside a hospital bathroom just two days after being admitted, on January 18, 2025.
The complaint alleges imaging later revealed a brain bleed and that her neurological condition worsened in the hours that followed, with claims that delays in monitoring and treatment care contributed to her decline. Jones died on January 21, 2025, according to reports summariizing the complaint.
The suit names Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, Novant Health entities and physician Dr. Jane Anne Shaw as defendants.
In a statement, a Novant spokesperson said, “We extend our deepest condolences to those grieving the loss of a loved one, however, we are unable to disclose details concerning the care of a patient or discuss active litigation.”
