Safety Precautions & Preparedness Guidelines

Roadway Safety

  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown: Never drive around official barricades or attempt to cross flooded roadways of unknown depth.

  • Allow Extra Travel Time: Minor coastal flooding may prompt temporary road closures near tidal creeks, marshes, and the Intracoastal Waterway.

  • Exercise Nighttime Caution: Flooded roads are significantly harder to spot in the dark—drive with heightened awareness during early morning and evening hours.

Ocean & Beach Safety

  • Avoid Heavy Surf: Inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the ocean due to high surf and strong rip currents.

  • Swim Near Lifeguards: If entering the water, remain within view of an active lifeguard station.

  • Rip Current Survival: If caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. Swim parallel to the shoreline until clear of the pull, then head back toward land. If unable to escape, face the shore and wave or yell for assistance.

Residents across Columbus, Brunswick, and Horry counties are advised to monitor local conditions throughout the morning as stormy weather gives way to clearer skies.
