CHADBOURN, NC — The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a case of severe animal cruelty after deputies discovered one dead horse and another severely malnourished equine at a property near Chadbourn on Thursday, Oct. 8.
Deputies responded to a call regarding animal welfare at 133 Wagon Wheel Drive off Chadbourn. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers found two horses that had reportedly been left without adequate food or water for an extended period.
One horse, identified in incident report details as “Lady Bee,” survived the neglect and is receiving treatment for severe malnutrition. The second horse was pronounced dead at the scene.
First Sergeant Steven Moore was assigned as the reporting officer for the incident. Sheriff’s office incident logs list a 34-year-old male suspect in connection with the offense.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the neglect remains active and ongoing as authorities review the case for potential formal criminal charges.
