National Weather Service says conditions are favorable for tornado development across southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued Tornado *Watch 680, which remains in effect until 5:00 p.m. EDT Sunday for portions of southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina.

The watch includes six counties in southeastern North Carolina: Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, Pender and Robeson.

In South Carolina, the watch covers Dillon, Horry, Marion and Marlboro counties.

Communities included in the watch area include Whiteville, Chadbourn, Tabor City, Lake Waccamaw, Leland, Southport, Oak Island, Burgaw, Elizabethtown, Lumberton, Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Conway, Dillon, Marion and several other locations throughout the region.

A tornado *watch means atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Residents should stay alert to changing weather conditions and be prepared to take shelter immediately if a tornado warning is issued or threatening weather approaches.

Emergency officials recommend having multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including NOAA Weather Radio, local media broadcasts and smartphone weather notifications.

Those in the watch area should review severe weather safety plans, identify the safest location in their home or workplace and remain weather-aware throughout the afternoon.

The watch is scheduled to expire at 5:00 p.m. unless extended, replaced or canceled by the National Weather Service.

This is a developing weather situation. Coastal Carolina News will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
