WHITEVILLE, NC — Elephant rides at this year’s Columbus County Fair have become the subject of community discussion following the creation of an online petition calling for an end to the use of elephants in traveling acts across North Carolina.
The petition, Ban Use of Elephants in Traveling Acts in NC, was launched after the fair and specifically references elephant rides offered at the event. The petition cites concerns about the welfare of elephants used in traveling exhibitions and urges fair organizers and state officials to discontinue the practice. As of October 21, the petition had collected more than 100 verified signatures.
The attraction itself is not new to the Columbus County Fair, having appeared at previous fairs over the years. However, this year’s appearance after a 5 year pause – has generated renewed discussion on social media, where residents have expressed differing views on the use of elephants for rides and public exhibition.
Supporters of the petition argue that elephants are intelligent, social animals that should not be used in traveling entertainment acts. Several commenters said they believe elephants belong in more natural environments and questioned whether rides and exhibitions are in the animals’ best interest.
Others disagreed, defending the attraction and the care provided to the animals. Supporters argued that maintaining elephants requires substantial resources, specialized care, permits and veterinary oversight. Some also noted that attractions such as elephant rides provide opportunities for families to see animals they may never otherwise encounter in person.
The conversation reflects a broader debate that has taken place in communities across the country regarding the role of elephants and other exotic animals in fairs, exhibitions and traveling entertainment acts.
At this time, no changes regarding future elephant appearances at the Columbus County Fair have been announced. However, the petition and the resulting online discussion have brought renewed attention to differing views within the community about the use of animals in public entertainment.
