SMITHVILLE, Tenn. — Neotraditional country music pioneer and Country Music Hall of Fame inductee John Anderson passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at the age of 71.

Anderson’s family shared the announcement, remembering him as both an icon of the genre and a devoted family man. Just three days prior, on Sunday, October 18, Anderson attended the Country Music Hall of Fame’s annual Medallion Ceremony in Nashville, where peers noted he was in high spirits and sharing stories.

Born in Florida, Anderson moved to Nashville in the 70s, helping return a gritty, honky-tonk authenticity to the airwaves. Over a legendary career, he scored five number-one hits on the U.S. country charts, including the 1983 CMA Single of the Year “Swingin’,” as well as “Seminole Wind,” “Straight Tequila Night,” and “Black Sheep.” He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and earned his place in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.

He is survived by his wife, Jamie, their children, and grandchildren, having spent his final years on his farm in Smithville, Tennessee.
