Convenience store, gas station and car wash project now moves to Horry County Council for consideration

LITTLE RIVER, SC — The Horry County Planning Commission unanimously approved a proposal Thursday that could bring the first Wawa convenience store to South Carolina.

The request was submitted by WW LLC, acting as an agent for Baytree SC LLC, and seeks to amend plans for a 3.14-acre parcel located at the corner of Water Grande Boulevard and Highway 9 East in Little River.

The proposal would allow construction of a Wawa convenience store featuring gas pumps and an attached car wash.

Wawa, a Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain known for its made-to-order food, fuel services and retail offerings, currently operates locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Florida.

The Little River site would become the company’s first location in South Carolina, if approved.

While the Planning Commission’s recommendation marks a significant step forward for the project, the proposal must still undergo a series of readings before the Horry County Council. County leaders will have the final say on whether the amendment is approved.

Even if County Council ultimately gives its approval, the measure is not expected to be finalized until 2027.

The proposed development would add another major commercial project to the growing Little River area, which has seen continued residential and retail expansion in recent years.
