WHITEVILLE, N.C. — Municipal stormwater crews are taking advantage of dry conditions to clear blockages and restore natural drainage along Soules Swamp west of U.S. 701.
City of Whiteville Stormwater Manager Hal Lowder and Streamflow Rehabilitation Assistance Program (StRAP) contractor Daniel Beard surveyed portions of the waterway, identifying several buildup areas, small beaver dams, dead trees, and accumulated debris obstructing flow.
Crews breached the initial beaver dams during preliminary surveys and are returning to the site with excavators and heavy equipment to fully remove the structures, fallen timber, and snagged debris.
Work is moving to the east side of U.S. 701 to conduct additional waterway surveys and execute clearance operations. The initiative is part of ongoing regional stormwater maintenance and flood mitigation efforts funded through state streamflow rehabilitation grants.
