Horry County, SC — September is National Recovery Month, a time to highlight programs that inspire hope and recognize the progress happening within the community.
For twenty years, AD to Recovery has partnered with the Horry County Sheriff’s Office to provide substance‑abuse treatment programs to male inmates at J. Reuben Long Detention Center. The initiative, known as “Next Steps,” has helped participants rebuild stability, strengthen families, and begin long‑term recovery. In 2023, the Sheriff’s Office expanded access to these programs by offering them to incarcerated females for the first time. That same year, the county launched its first Re‑entry Council, bringing community organizations together to address chronic recidivism.
Through these partnerships, the Sheriff’s Office and AD to Recovery work to introduce individuals to recovery and ensure support continues after release. As part of that effort, the Next Steps team recently acquired two vehicles dedicated to transporting people once they leave the detention center. The vans help individuals reach essential appointments, including the Department of Social Services for ID cards or SNAP benefits, probation meetings, employment opportunities, and recovery housing, depending on their needs.
Treatment Director Adriana Knight said many people fall back into addiction because they leave jail without support or guidance. “These individuals are especially vulnerable. They need someone who they trust to take them to their Next Step,” Knight said.
