MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Lakewood Camping Resort, located at 5901 South Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach has walked back a short‑lived flag ban after a camper was told to remove a Thin Blue Line flag on Sept. 11 – a move that sparked swift backlash across the Grand Strand.
The guest had raised the flag to honor law enforcement on the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Later that afternoon, resort security delivered a written notice citing a new rule that prohibited “Blue Line/Support flags.” Only American, state, military, and sports team flags were allowed.
Within hours, photos of the citation spread online, and the campground faced heavy criticism for enforcing the policy on a day tied to first‑responder remembrance.
Two days later, Lakewood’s board reversed the decision. In a statement shared publicly, the board admitted the change “sent a message we did not intend” and said, “We got this wrong, and we apologize.” The notice was withdrawn, and the previous flag policy reinstated.
The board also clarified that employees were carrying out instructions as directed and that responsibility for the decision rested with leadership. The statement reaffirmed that flags supporting first responders are welcome at the resort.
Lakewood Camping Resort, a longtime oceanfront fixture in Myrtle Beach, has operated for more than six decades and hosts thousands of families each year.
