Crash happened early Saturday near Beaverdam Road as cooler fall nights increase deer activity
Whiteville, NC — A Whiteville man died after his motorcycle struck a deer on US 701 early Saturday morning, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. near Beaverdam Road, a rural stretch of highway south of town where visibility is limited overnight.
Highway Patrol information indicates that 55‑year‑old Terry Walker was traveling north on his Harley‑Davidson when a deer struck the motorcycle. The impact caused the bike to flip and slide across the center line, throwing both Walker and a female passenger from the motorcycle. The deer was found dead at the scene.
Walker was taken to Columbus Regional Healthcare System and later transferred to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, where Terry died from his injuries on Sunday. The passenger was airlifted for treatment and is expected to recover, based on information released by authorities.
A benefit ride is being organized for Walker’s family, though organizers have not yet announced public details.
The collision occurred during one of the busiest periods for deer‑related crashes in North Carolina, particularly with the cooler fall nights rolling in when deer are running.
The Highway Patrol continues to review the crash, including speed, lighting conditions, and roadway factors. No additional details have been released.
