City closes dam gate after receiving final approval from state regulators to begin impoundment.
BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC — The City of Boiling Spring Lakes announced Monday that North Lake will begin refilling after the city received a Certificate of Final Approval to Modify North Lake Dam from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Dam Safety Program.
According to city officials, the approval certifies that the area upstream of the dam can now begin to be impounded, or filled with water.
The city said it completed a follow-up inspection of the area and closed the dam gate valve on Oct. 5, allowing the impoundment process to begin.
Public Works crews will continue performing minor lake bed clearing while the lake fills.
Officials said the process is expected to take several weeks, although weather conditions could accelerate the timeline.
The announcement marks the latest milestone in the North Lake dam project as water begins returning to the lake basin following completion of the approved modifications.
