HORRY COUNTY, SC — Motorists traveling along Highway 701 north of Conway can expect ongoing construction activity as crews continue work on a major roadway improvement project designed to increase capacity and enhance safety.
The project, which stretches between S.C. Highway 319 and Highway 22, is part of Horry County’s RIDE 3 transportation program.
Once completed, the corridor will be expanded to five lanes and include a center turn lane, wider travel lanes and new sidewalks.
Construction crews are currently focused on building up the roadway to its planned elevation while also installing drainage improvements along the corridor. Additional work includes relocating water and sewer infrastructure to accommodate the future roadway configuration.
Drivers may have noticed sections of new asphalt placed between S.C. Highway 319 and Harris Shortcut. Officials have indicated that this material serves as a base layer to raise the roadway to its designed grade and is not the project’s final driving surface.
Motorists are encouraged to remain alert, reduce speeds in work zones and watch for construction equipment and crews as work progresses.
The Highway 701 widening project is expected to remain under construction through 2028.
