New 35 mph limit and LSV restriction approved for curved section of roadway
OAK ISLAND, NC — The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will reduce the speed limit on a portion of East Oak Island Drive and prohibit low-speed vehicles in the same area following a safety-focused request from the Town of Oak Island.
The change affects East Oak Island Drive between 38th Street and 19th Street, where the speed limit will be lowered from 45 mph to 35 mph. Low Speed Vehicles (LSVs) will also be prohibited within that stretch of road.
No other sections of East Oak Island Drive are impacted by the change.
According to town officials, NCDOT is expected to install the new 35 mph speed limit signs within two weeks of Oct. 15, 2026. The revised speed limit will become effective as soon as the signs are in place.
The change stems from an April 14, 2026, vote by the Oak Island Town Council, which supported reducing speeds through the large curves near the Oak Island Recreation Center.
Town leaders cited safety concerns as the primary reason for seeking the adjustment.
Drivers traveling through the area should watch for updated signage and be prepared to follow the new speed limit once it takes effect.
