FDA-Classified Butter Recall Affects 10 States Over Possible E. Coli Contamination

Consumers are urged to check for recalled butter products after federal officials announced a recall linked to potential E. coli contamination concerns.

FDA RECALL:  Federal health officials have classified a recall involving a plant-based butter product distributed in 10 states after concerns about possible E. coli contamination.

The recall involves Miyoko’s Creamery European Style Cultured Vegan Butter, a plant-based butter alternative. The product was distributed in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Wisconsin.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recall was classified as a Class II recall, indicating that use of or exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious health consequences is remote.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled product should check packaging and lot information against the recall notice and should not consume affected products.

Although North Carolina was not listed among the states included in the distribution area, consumers who purchased the product through online retailers or while traveling may wish to verify whether they have the recalled item.

Symptoms of E. coli infection can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Individuals who believe they may have become ill after consuming a recalled product should contact a healthcare provider.

The FDA continues to monitor food safety recalls and encourages consumers to stay informed about products that may pose potential health risks.
