COLUMBUS COUNTY FALL SPORTS ROUNDUP
While football has dominated the headlines this fall, Columbus County athletes have been competing across a variety of sports with several teams and individuals making noise in conference play and postseason competition.
GIRLS TENNIS
Whiteville once again fielded one of the county’s strongest programs.
Earlier this season, the Wolfpack swept West Bladen 9-0 behind victories from Thompson, Munn, Worthington, Benton, Garcia-Corona and Batazor in singles competition. The Pack also claimed all three doubles matches.
Whiteville’s success continued into postseason play. The Wolfpack advanced in the NCHSAA team playoffs after defeating Louisburg Magnet 5-4 and carried a 9-4 record into the third round.
One of the county’s top individual performers, Creek Wyatt of Whiteville, advanced in individual playoff competition after earning a No. 3 seed.
South Columbus also reached the state playoffs before its season ended against perennial powerhouse Greene Central. The Stallions finished 3-9.
VOLLEYBALL
South Columbus enjoyed one of the county’s stronger volleyball campaigns and defeated Whiteville in a key late-season matchup by a 3-1 score.
Whiteville struggled through much of the season, finishing with a 2-17 overall record and a 2-8 conference mark.
State volleyball championships were contested this weekend following a month-long playoff run that began in mid-October.
BOYS SOCCER
Whiteville fielded the county’s most competitive boys soccer team this season.
The Wolfpack carried a 5-8-3 record late in the year and scored 18 goals during the campaign. Senior striker Paxton Bass emerged as Whiteville’s leading scorer with seven goals, while Swift Pridgen led the team with three assists.
West Columbus endured a difficult season, posting a 1-10 record, but continued to battle throughout conference play.
East Columbus managed a 1-1 tie with Whiteville during one of the county’s notable non-conference matchups.
CROSS COUNTRY
Cross country teams from Whiteville, East Columbus, South Columbus and West Columbus have been participating in conference and regional competition throughout the fall, with state qualifying events recently taking place across North Carolina. Regional and state-level results are expected to become available as championship competition concludes.
