SOUTH BRUNSWICK SOCCER LEADS STRONG FALL CAMPAIGN FOR BRUNSWICK COUNTY SCHOOLS
While football has captured most of the attention this fall, Brunswick County athletes have quietly produced an impressive season across boys soccer, volleyball and girls tennis, with conference championships, playoff appearances and postseason opportunities highlighting the county’s non-football sports landscape.
BOYS SOCCER
South Brunswick enters the state playoffs as Brunswick County’s biggest postseason story.
The Cougars finished 8-10-3 overall but dominated their conference schedule, posting a 7-1 league record to claim the conference championship. South Brunswick secured key conference victories over Whiteville, Red Springs, South Columbus and West Bladen on its way to the title. The Cougars are scheduled to open the NCHSAA state playoffs on Nov. 2 at Eastern Alamance.
Despite the conference championship, the Cougars had little margin for error during a difficult non-conference schedule that included matches against Croatan, Dixon, Heide Trask and other strong programs. By season’s end, however, South Brunswick had established itself as one of the stronger soccer teams in southeastern North Carolina.
West Brunswick finished 9-10-1 overall and showed flashes of offensive firepower throughout the season, scoring 59 goals. The Trojans earned victories over county rivals South Brunswick and North Brunswick and entered the final stretch of the season with hopes of playoff consideration before a difficult run through the powerful Mideastern Conference schedule.
One of the season’s notable achievements came when West Brunswick defeated South Brunswick twice in non-conference play, including a 4-0 victory in September.
North Brunswick also remained competitive throughout the season and earned an early-season 4-2 victory over South Brunswick, underscoring the depth of soccer talent throughout the county.
VOLLEYBALL
West Brunswick represented Brunswick County in the NCHSAA state volleyball playoffs.
The Trojans qualified for postseason play and traveled to face South Johnston in the opening round. West Brunswick won the first set before South Johnston rallied to win the next three sets and claim the match, ending the Trojans’ season. The final score was 3-1 in favor of South Johnston.
Although the playoff run was brief, earning a state playoff berth capped a successful season for the Trojans and continued the program’s recent tradition of postseason appearances.
GIRLS TENNIS
Brunswick County’s girls tennis programs once again qualified for NCHSAA postseason competition this fall.
The state dual-team tennis playoffs began in October and concluded with the state championships on Oct. 30-31. Multiple Brunswick County schools participated in postseason competition, continuing a trend of consistent representation from the county in state tennis brackets.
While available statewide playoff records confirm county participation, published playoff bracket information does not provide enough detail to verify individual match results for Brunswick County teams. Rather than speculate, Coastal Carolina News has omitted any unverified postseason outcomes.
