LELAND, NC –– The Town of Leland has been awarded $973,600 to help build a new walking and biking path along South Navassa Road.
The planned path will be about one-third of a mile long, 10 feet wide, and will extend to Loop Road. The project is designed to make it safer and easier for people to walk, bike, and travel between neighborhoods and nearby destinations.
Once completed, the path will connect to an existing trail and provide a direct route to residential communities, Village Road, Leland’s Gateway District, Sturgeon Creek, and future parks and recreation areas.
Town leaders identified the project as an important transportation improvement because it will give residents more options for getting around without relying solely on vehicles.
The funding comes from the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO) through its Locally Administered Projects Program (LAPP). The program helps local governments pay for transportation projects such as roads, sidewalks, bike paths, bridges, and transit improvements.
Leland was one of four communities selected to receive funding through this round of the program.
