Conway to Dedicate World War II Memorial Honoring Norton Twins and Horry County Veterans

WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL - Conway SC

CONWAY, SC — The City of Conway will host a dedication ceremony Monday, November 9, at 11:00 a.m. for a new historic marker and memorial recognizing Horry County’s contribution to World War II and honoring the sacrifice of Lt. Edward R. Norton Jr. and Lt. James A. Norton.

The ceremony will take place at the northeast corner of Collins Park, located at 1012 16th Ave., Conway, near the intersection of Main Street and 16th Avenue. Members of the Norton family, city officials, local historians and community members are expected to attend.

Music will be provided by the Conway High School A Cappella Choir.

The memorial commemorates the Norton twins, who served as pilot and co-pilot of a B-26 Marauder bomber during World War II. The brothers lost their lives during a bombing mission in Europe in 1943. The marker also recognizes the service of approximately 4,000 Horry County residents who served during the war and pays tribute to the more than 70 local service members who died in the conflict.

The historic marker highlights Horry County’s wartime contributions, including military service and the establishment of Myrtle Beach Army Air Field, which later became Myrtle Beach Air Force Base.

The new memorial plaza was created through a partnership involving the City of Conway, the Horry County Historical Society, the Horry County Historic Preservation Commission and Coastal Carolina University’s United Bank Center for Military and Veteran Studies. The plaza surrounding the marker was supported by Lynda Johnson and Arnold Johnson of Conway, while the memorial’s design was donated by LS3P.

City officials are encouraging families of World War II veterans and members of the public to attend the ceremony as the community gathers to remember the service and sacrifice of those who served during one of the most significant periods in American history.
