Take The Lake Returns Labor Day Weekend at Lake Waccamaw

Annual fitness challenge offers four signature events from September 5 through September 7, 2026

LAKE WACCAMAW, N.C. — Lake Waccamaw’s Labor Day weekend will once again center around a familiar community tradition as the 15th annual Take the Lake returns from September 5 through September 7, 2026. The event is based at Elizabeth Brinkley Park, where families, neighbors, and longtime supporters gather before the weekend’s activity spreads out across the shoreline.

Take the Lake has become part of the town’s holiday rhythm, known for its relaxed, non‑competitive format and its emphasis on simply enjoying the lake. While many residents take part in the Walk/Run, Bike, Paddle, or X‑Treme challenge, just as many come out to watch, cheer, and spend time together. Crowds often form near the park, along the eastern side of the lake, and at public access points as people encourage participants and enjoy the morning air.

Each activity offers a different view of Lake Waccamaw. Walkers and runners start early near the eastern shoreline, cyclists trace the longer perimeter route, and paddlers move quietly across the water. The X‑Treme challenge blends multiple disciplines and has become a recognizable part of the weekend’s identity, drawing spectators who follow portions of the route to support friends and family.

Local agencies and volunteers assist with safety checkpoints, hydration stations, and route guidance. Areas near Elizabeth Brinkley Park, Lake Waccamaw State Park, the dam, and other access points typically see increased traffic as the holiday weekend unfolds.

Take the Lake remains a steady Labor Day tradition for Lake Waccamaw, offering a familiar mix of outdoor recreation, community presence, and the annual return of activity around the water.
