Smuggling Attempt Damaging Prison Property Under Investigation

WHITEVILLE, N.C. — State and local authorities are investigating an attempted contraband drop at Columbus Correctional Institution after perpetrators damaged state facility property while attempting to deliver contraband.

Deputies responded to the N.C. Department of Adult Correction facility on Prison Camp Road on Sept. 7 around 3:30 p.m. Incident logs reveal a black Infiniti Q50 was utilized during an attempt to introduce illegal items over the facility perimeter.

Investigators seized 258 grams of marijuana and 460 grams of packaged tobacco during the response. The incident also caused estimated damages of $250 to the prison perimeter security fencing.

No immediate arrests were recorded on the incident report, and the investigation into those operating the vehicle remains ongoing.
